Welcome to the first post on the Animation Deconstructed Blog.

My name is Shaul Goncalves and I am an Animator based out of Lisbon, Portugal. I’ve worked in, and with gaming companies for close to 15 years, specializing in marketing animations, mobile and indie style game animations, and general special effects and compositing.

This website has been a long time in the making, always getting put off by the classic excuse, ‘I’m just too busy’.

Well, that isn’t the case any longer! As with millions of others around the world, Covid-19 pressed the pause button (and in some cases the reset button) on our lives. This has given me the time to reassess my priorities, my passions and find that healthy balance of doing what I love at the same time as sharing my experience and techniques which I have learned and developed over the years with others.

For years I have watched as people shared their knowledge on blogs and YouTube, empowering other artists so that they can create amazing experiences. Thankfully I have been lucky enough to be able to train the teams I have worked with. From Africa to Europe to Hong Kong, I have helped individuals as well as studios level-up their team so that they can have the tools and the know-how to complete any job thrown at them.

You see, I love teaching people how to bring art to life. To me, good animation is like seeing a great magic trick for the first time. Over the years I also noticed that I am happiest when I am helping others learn. Don’t get me wrong, I love bringing art and characters to life – the thing is, I also want others to experience the feeling of seeing their animated vision become a reality.

So, what can you expect here?

Well, I’m going to share everything I know about animation right here and on YouTube. I’ll use the usual social media tools to reach as many people as possible, and from time to time I will upload my working files if the tutorial deems it.

I will at some stage create courses, but this won’t be due to the lack of quality being shared on YouTube and right here. The only difference will be that there will be structure. In my experience you get two types of creatives:

  •  Those who can learn on their own through free videos
  • Those who need more structure to ensure they learn all the tricks a techniques

I will say this, working with people in different parts of the world showed me that their is a need for more affordable, quality animation courses. This is exactly where I will position my courses. Everyone should be able to up-skill themselves, from students working part-time, to waiters and waitresses, to the junior intern at an agency who feels like they want to leap-frog over the other employees into the position of their dreams.

So, welcome to my new adventure, and join me as I learn how to share my knowledge on the internet, and hopefully you learn some new and interesting animation techniques.

Until next time…
